CLUB
HISTORY
Driffield
& District Divers was formed in 1984, as an off shoot from a
club based in Filey. Twelve
experienced divers had decided to form their own diving club as
they believed that there was sufficient local interest in diving
for it to become well established. Fred Peeke, Ian Hearne and Brian
Wheeldon were elected as the founding committee.
In
that first year, the club joined the Sub-Aqua Association (the governing
body for all independent diving clubs), and started offering regular
club nights at Driffield swimming pool.

A
year later, the club had found its own purpose build clubhouse
in Bridge Street in Driffield to house equipment like the compressor
which is used to fill the dive tanks. It is also the place where
the regular Tuesday night club meetings were held - and still are
to this day!
Through
the years, the club has continued to offer its own in-house training
programme so that novices could learn to dive in a safe and structured
way. Click here for the club's online
training section.
Normally,
this training is carried out through the winter at Driffield Pool,
but the closure of the facility midway through the season in the
Autumn of 2002 caused the club a slight problem! As an alternative,
members used Hornsea pool and managed to get everything completed.
The
bulk of the club's activity is during the summer months when the
visibility and clarity of the water off the East Yorkshire coast
is at its best. There are thousands of boat wrecks off the coast,
and the thrill of diving them is discovering treasures from yesteryear.
It is also great to dive straight off the coast, and explore inshore
areas off Flamborough and Filey. There is an abundance of marine
life to admire.
The
club celebrated its 600th meeting on Tuesday May 27th 2002 - and
was 20 years' old in 2004!
